Breaking news - 26 May 2008 - Quiz

The annual quiz vs Pretoria East took place at the meeting. The quiz was started during the 2003-04 Toastmasters year. The objective of the quiz is for new members to learn more about the organisation.

Breaking news - 12 May 2008

The theme of the evening was South African Customs (i.e. traditions) and members wanted to change the Afrikaans custom of calling older people "tannie" and "oom" and the African custom of labola.

 

The Table Topics participants were:

The theme of the evening was success and the Toastmaster of the Evening - Willem le Roux - gave some interesting facts about success.

The Word for the evening was: Emulate - try to equal or excel.

Breaking news - 25 February 2008

The theme of the evening was Animals and members introduced themselves by telling the audience about their first pets. The Toastmaster - Marius Potgieter - had some interesting facts about animals.

The Table Topics Master - Victor Mhangwana - used the theme to introduce the topics to the speakers:

  • Salmon Barnard - Dolphins and things that make people laught
  • Susan le Roux - Poodles and things that make people talk to strangers
  • Richard van der Walt - Cows and things that make people generous
  • Marion Poole - Skunks and things of unimportance
  • Lynnette Vermaak - Dodo and things that make people feel grateful to be alive

The winner of the table topics trophy was Marion Poole.

We had three speakers that did prepared speakers:

  • Moses Mashishi (CC3) - Money makes the world go round, save it
  • Willem le Roux (CC9) - Convincing quadruplegics assosiation to use animals as treatment for patients
  • Marius Potgieter (AC 8) - Story Telling: The wooden bowl.

The best evaluator trophy was received by Lynette Vermaak.

Breaking news - 11 February 2008

The Word Master of the evening - Willem le Roux - used the word: "Devotion - a strong attachment marked by loyalty". All members introduced themselves using the word and expressed devotion to their families, husbands, wifes, children and even Toastmasters.

The Toastmaster of the evening - Elsi Meyer - used the theme of the evening Love and also explained where Valentine's Day originated from.

The members were excited by the visit from the Area Governor - Ab Vonkeman - who address the club and shed some light (sorry Eskom) on the goals of Area A3, Division A and District 74.

The Table Topics Master - Lynnette Vermaak stayed within the theme of "Love" for the unprepared section of the program and the speakers spoke about:

  • Salmon Barnard - Flowers for Valentine's Day
  • Brian Tomlin - Choclates for Valentine's Day
  • Ab Vonkeman - Most memorable Valentine's Day
  • Bertus Theron - Most desired gift received / given on Valentine's day.

The winner of the Table Topics Trophy was: Salmon Barnard.

Victor Mhangwane who presented a CC4 speech (entitled: The common ground between the Saint, the Scientist, and the successful business man) received the CC Trophy for the evening and the evaluation trophy was shared by Salmon Barnard and Frances Boshoff.

Breaking news - 22 October 2007

The theme of the meeting was Fast Foods and to complement the theme some Pizza's was ordered to satisfy the hungry and the not so hungry.

Two new members were inducted:

Moses Mashishi delivered his CC 1 entitled Journey of a perfect life and Victor Mhangwana CC2 entitled Failure as an orphan - success has many fathers was enspring. Moses received the best speaker of the evening award.

The Table Topics was presented by Richard van der Walt and the following members participated:

Breaking news - 27 August 2007 - Annual Tall Story Contest

The clubs Annual Tall Story Contest was a huge success with six contestants telling tall stories. Adrian Spruyt successfully defended his title as Vital Communicator's Tall Story Champion.

Breaking news - 13 August 2007 - Books

The theme of the meeting was Books and the Toastmaster of the evening - Bertus Theron - entertained the members and guests with his knowledge on books. The Table Topics Master - Willem le Roux - also included Books in the topics. The Impromptu speakers were:

  • Elsi Meyer - Play by the book
  • Bertus Theron - Being a book work
  • Susan le Roux - Being bookwise

The winner of the Impromptu speaking session was Petro Hartslief.

Two speakers presented speeches from the Competent Communicator (CC) manual:

Salmon was the winner of the prepared speaking session.

Marius Potgieter also presented a speech from the Advanced Story Telling manul - The moral of the story - Nuturing friends.

Salmon Barnard was elected Sergeant-at-arms after the resignation of Pumla Tinta.

On Monday, VC celebrated 19 years of Toastmastering. Six participants from youth leadership courses were invited to speak at the meeting.

Breaking news - 11 June 2007

At the penultimate meeting of 2006-07 Toastmasters year, George was finally 'rescued'. Four members of the newly rebuild Sterlitzia club attend the VC meeting and captured George.

Petro van Niekerk completed her final speech from the Competent Communicator manual. The title of her speech was: Power and Principles. She will receive the Competent Communicator certificate. Congratulations Petro.

Willem le Roux presented a speech from the Entertaining manual entitled - Vegetarians are people too. This was an informative speech, but also entertaining.

The Table Topics Master - Frances Boshoff - asked members to give their opinion on the following quotes:

  • Elsi Meyer - When the student is ready, the teacher will appear (Anon)
  • Marion Poole - The greater the obstacle to overcome, the greater the personal development (Glen McQuirk)
  • Gert van der Merwe - The higher you climb the more severe the weather conditions (Glen McQuirk)

On a rather cold Monday evening VC members enjoyed the fellowship of members and guest, listened to excellent speeches and elected the 2007-08 club officers. The theme of the meeting was Jack Frost and members were asked to introduce themselves explaining how they stay warm during cold winter evenings.

Devan Reddy (CC3) informed us how to do Basic plumbing at home, while Pumla Tinta reinforced Maslow's hierarch of needs. Elise Meyer was the only advanced speaker, speaking from the Story Telling manual - telling us about walking fire with her speech entitled The odd one out.

The table topic session was done by Marion Poole, and the following people participated in the session:

  • Susan le Roux - It is -10 degree, snow falling, not much wood left, and then ...
  • Pumla Tinta - A frozen river, children ice-skating, I need to cross the river, I decided ...

George, the travelling gavel, is still at VC and is getting really desparate to be 'rescued'.

Breaking news - 14 May 2007

On Monday 14 May George - the travelling gavel - was hoping to be 'rescued' from his long stay at Vital Communicators. However, it seems that the other clubs in D74 only wanted to rescue him before conference. He is however optomistic that it will happen soon! Members were asked to introduce themselves and explaining what George will 'tell' other clubs. Some of the things George will say:

  • VC is a nice club
  • He is lonesome
  • No one wants him, but VC and he think he will stay forever
  • He wants to see more people interested in TM

The past weekend was TM annual maxi-conference - BankON. It was a great opportunity for members and non-members alike to INVEST IN YOURSELF! The two keynote speakers, Arnold Mol on Friday and Mark Brown on Saturday was exceptional.

At the meeting we had three speakers - Onicca Mphake did a CC3 entitled Change is a blessing, Marion Poole told a story about Nqalu - the mouse with no whiskers and Marius Potgieter spoke from the Speaking to Inform manual to the title Custormer profile research funding.

Silke von Castricum was the Table Topics Master and decided to use some of the ministers as a theme ...

The theme of the meeting was Eggs - Easter, Chicken, Faberge ... The Toastmaster of the evening was Willem le Roux.

Four guests visited the club and applied for membership. The Table Topics chairman - Marius Potgieter - focussed on Revitalization. The speakers were:

Breaking news - 26 February 2007

The theme for the meeting last night was 3 Weddings and a funeral and members were asked to introduce themselves using the theme.

Four guests attended the meeting. Salmon's team is in the lead in the Membership Building contest.

Four members presented speeches from the basic Competent Communicator manual:

The theme of the meeting was Global warming and the Toastmaster of the evening, Marius Potgieter, kept us on our toes with the effects of global warming ...

Four guests visited the club and said at the end of the meeting that they really enjoyed it and that it is definitely a friendly environment in which one can learn to art of public speaking.

Two members presented speeches from the Competent Communicator (basic) manual:

  • Salmon Barnard (CC2) - Pain ... my guardian angel
  • Devan Reddy (CC2) - Mobile 2 mobile call
  • Elsi Meyer was the only Advanced Speaker for the evening and gave us some insights into Tarrot Cards.

The winner of the speaking award for the evening was Devan Reddy and the winner of the evaluation award was Frances Boshoff. Bertus was (again!) given the honk award!

A membership competition was launched. The competition will run from 1 February until 31 March 2007. The club members have been divided into two teams with a team leader each. At the meeting on 12 February you will receive each 10 cards for marketing that you can use to entice people to visit VC.

The winning team will each reach a super size chocolate and the member signing up the most new members will get his / her day (Saturday, 12 May) fee paid for the conference in May in Pretoria. So, book this day in your diary already … and get the opportunity to listen to Mark Brown, World Speech Contest Champion, 1995. (I heard him speak in Toronto, Canada and it is definitely an opportunity not to be missed!)

The theme of the meeting was What do you expect from Vital? During the Table Topic session the particpants were asked the following questions:

Onnica Mphake presented her first speech and Willem completed the Competent Communicator (CC) #9 (impromptu). Bertus Theron spoke from the Advanced manual "Speaking to Inform" and completed advanced assignment #13.

The meeting was used for preparing for the debate against Pretoria 2000. The topic - Schools must allow learners to take cell phones to school.

The best evaluator was Frances and the best Table Topics speaker was Elsi Meyer. Willem le Roux received the best Advanced speaker award.

At this meeting we were privileged to have Prof Sakkie Badenhorst as the guest speaker. Prof Badenhorst has walked around the world in 8 years

The best CL speaker was Yvonne Scheepers with her speech entitled True Love. Gert received the best evaluator award and Elsi was the best advanced speaker with a speech entitled Save haven to the heart. Elsi spoke from the Story Telling manual.

Breaking news - 2 October 2006

At the meeting held on Monday, 2 October 2006 Marius Potgieter presented his second Advance speech entitled - Marketing, the perfect bridge. Frances Boshoff motivated the audience with her speech entitled The Fred Factor. Willem le Roux practised his competition speech. Willem is representing area A3 at the Division Humorous Speech contest on 17 October 2006.

At the business meeting Onicca Mphake was accpeted as a member. Onicca will be inducted on Monday, 16 October 2006.

The meeting held on Monday, 28 August theme was Bring a guest. Four guests attended the meeting. Devan Reddy was inducted as a new member.

Lynnette Vermaak conducted the Table Tobic session and Paul Zietmans walked away with the best Table Topics award with his speech entitled Wind.

Marius Potgieter was the prepared speech winner with his speech - Smile? and Lynnette the winner of the evaluation award.

Breaking news - 14 August 2006

On Monday, 14 August 2006 the members of VC was privilege to listen to Christof Appel - District 74's International Speech Champion. Christof will be representing Toastmasters Southern Africa at the World Championship of public speaking in Washington in August.

Our newest member - Pumla Tinta - presented her first speech. The speech entitled My life gave the members an insight into Pumla's life. Pumla was also the recipient of the best speaker award. Bertus Theron, Susan le Roux and Willem le Roux also presented prepares speeches.

The unprepared speeches was introduced by Brian Tomlin, who used news headlines as topics. The best unprepared speaker for the evening was Susan le Roux. On Monday 24 July VC celebrated its 18th birthday. Adolph Kaestner, DTM and Past District Governor was the guest speaker. He speech entitled - 18 Years On - and still relevant? The keynote address was insightful and Dolf said that Vital stands for:

A - Action
L - love to develop, sharing experience

VC was also the first club to charter during the 1988/89 Toastmasters year.

One of the Youth Leadership delegates - Charne Wagenaar from Clapham High School shared her views on "Is SA free of terrorism?"

Helene Dicks presented her first speech - Competent Communicator #1 - entiled My ocean called love. Petro van Niekerk's CC7 was entitled Murder and Gert Smalberger's CC9 entitled The truth is out there kept the audience entertained throughout the evening.

The Best Table Topics award was given to David Cairns (a member of Kommunika Toastmasters), Gert received the best speaker award and Marion Poole was the best evaluator.

Breaking news - 10 July 2006

The first meeting of the 2006-07 Toastmasters year was used to plan the club events for the year. Only one person presented a speech - Willem le Roux is busy with his 3rd Competent Communicator award. Willem decided to go through the basic program again and is doing it again - impromtu. This means that the Toastmaster for the evening will give him a topic to speak on.

The Honk for the evening was presented to the president - Bertus Theron - for getting involved with the le Roux's bedroom affairs.

Breaking news - 26 June 2006

On Monday, 26June 2006 was the last meeting for this Toastmasters year. Barry Nelson, District Secretary (2005/06) was invited to induct the new club officers.

The incoming president, Bertus Theron, announced his theme for 2006/07: Participation is the key. Bertus said that VC must provide members the opportunity to participate in the program and that the club should actively solicit members' participation. He further emphasised that members should sieze the opportunityies provided to them and also actively seek opportunities contribute participation.

The members of VC are looking forward to the new Toastmasters year.

Breaking news - 12 June 2006

On Monday, 12 June 2006 two members completed their CL10 speeches - obtaining a CTM. Willem le Roux's inspiring talk was entitled You can become a leader. This was followed by another inspiring CL10 by Marius Potgieter, entitled If I do not make a difference.

Susan le Roux completed the final speech for her Advanced Toastmasters Silver.

During the Table Topic session, speakers were asked to talk about the different seasons.

The best prepared speaker for the Evening was Marius Potgieter and the best Table Topics speaker was Marion Poole. Bertus Theron walked away with the award for the best Evaluator.

During the business meeting held Pumla was accepted as a new member. The members of the club welcome her and look forward to hearing her first speech.

On Monday 27 March, the club held it annual International, Evaluation and Impromptu contests. The winners of these three competition will represent the club at the Area contest on Saturday, 6 May 2006.

Breaking news - 13 March 2006

The club has no settled at the new meeting venue at the Deutches Senioren Wohnheim in Groenkloof. Members and guests alike enjoy the new setting.

The theme of the meeting on Monday was Public speaking and Leadership - the right to learn. Two members presented speeches from the basic communication and leadership manual. Gert Smalberger's CL7 entitled China's one child per family policy enlightened the audience on the pro's and cons of one child per family. Frances Boshoff's completed her CTM and her speech title was What is your purpose? Jonas Maloka spoke from one of the advanced manuals and presented an award. The best speaker for the evening was Frances and Willem le Roux was the best evaluator. Lynnette Vermaak received the honk award for insisting that the club meets on a Tuesday instead of Monday.

The club also voted in a new member and we are looking forward to Kgomotso's first speech.

It was a fun evening and everyone enjoyed it.

Breaking news - 27 February 2006

The members of VC seems to be on a winning streak. First the debate team won the annual debate against Pretoria 2000 in November and this past Monday, the Quiz team won the annual Quiz against Pretoria East. The VC team members were Lynnette Vermaak, Jonas Maloka and Brian Tomlin. Pretoria East's team consisted of Chris Roth, Elmarie Meyer and Nydia Mentoor. The Quiz agains Pretoria East was started three years ago and it focusses on Toastmasters information. The questions are derived from the basic C&L manual as well as Toastmasters history.

Breaking news - 23 January 2006

On Monday we practise our impromptu skills with two Table Topic sessions. The first session was eloquently handled by Susan le Roux, Immediate Past President. Susan used Dilbert as an example and everyone in the club participated using a different word.

The second impromptu session took the form of musical chairs. The Vice-President Public Relations, Lynnette Vermaak, played music and whenever the music stopped and you were not seated, you had to present an unprepared speech.

Jonas Maloka spoke from one of the Advanced Manuals and Brian Tomlin (one of the longest standing members of the club) was the object of his roasting.

Our Lieutenant Governor Education and Training, Frances Boshoff, informed the club about the new educational track that will be implemented as of 1 July 2006. You can read more about this on the District 74 website.

The best speaker award for the evening went to Elsi Meyer, who presented a CL7 to the topic of Power vs Force.

Breaking news - 24 October 2005

At this meeting the club celebrated the 81st birthday of Toastmasters International. Susan le Roux conducted an interesting Table Topic session to honour the founder of the organisation.

Four members presented speeched from the basic communication and leadership manual and Jonas Maloka presented a speech from the Advanced Manual - Story Telling.

Willem le Roux received the best speaker award, Gert Smalberger the best Table Topics award and Frances and Gert shared the best evaluator award. Willem le Roux also received the Honk Award for his phrase "Potato coach".

The next meeting will be the annual debate vs Pretoria 2000 on 14 November 2005.

Breaking news - 10 October 2005

This was our first meeting at the new venue ... CBC Old Boys Club, George Storrar Road in Groenkloof.

At the meeting, members was asked to introduce themselves by giving an opinion on the earthquake in India. Ishmael Dabutha presented a CL2 speech on To nurture a plant, Frances Boshoff's CL3 speech was entitled The F-word. Mavis Mulaudzi presented her first advanced speech from the Speaking to inform manual and her speech was titled Are women in our society free.

It is time for the annual debate against Pretoria 2000 in November and Table Topics focussed on the subject for the debate. Gert Smalberger asked members to give positive thoughts on Jacarandas in Pretoria as well as the negative aspects. Members further expressed their opinion if Jacarandas should stay the image of Pretoria and what they would do to change the sights in Pretoria.

The best CL speaker was Ishamail, best Evaluator, Brian Tomlin and Petro Hartslief received the ribbon for the best Impromptu speaker. Bertus Theron was awared the honk of the evening for speaking about orange Jacarandas.

The president, Willem le Roux gave feedback on the recent conference in Port Elizabeth. At the conference, Willem & Susan le Roux received certificates of excellence at the conference for their contribution towards the success of the ARMSA SpeechCraft and Youth Leadership in Eersterust.

Breaking news - 12 September 2005

At the meeting held on Monday, 12 September, Frances Boshoff gave feedback on the International Convention in Toronto, Canada. The president, Willem le Roux, presented the Immediate Past President, Susan le Roux, with the President's Distinguished Ribbon for 2003/2004.

Five members presented speeches from the basic Communication and Leadership manuals and Ishmail Dabutha received the ribbon for the best speaker of the evening. Ishmail presented his CL 1 entitled The Pilar. Yvonne Scheepers also presented a CL 1 speech entitled What happened during my life.

Perrin Hartslief received the ribbon for the best evaluator for his evaluation of Frances' speech entitled If you going to do it, do it right.

Four members participated in the Table Topics session - Mzimkhulu Mcuba (Judge at a SPCA fete), Frances (A Dark stormy night), Perrin (It's winter, 2 brothers and 1 pair of shoes) and Gert Smalberger (Judge at a beauty contest). Perrin received the ribbon for the best Table Topics speech.

The honk award was presented to Gert for Being embarrased about naked women

We were also pleased that Silke von Castricum are once again attending meetings after a long sick bed.

The president concluded the meeting by wishing Gert well for his participation in the Area A3 Humorous Speech contest on Saturday, 17 September 2005.

Breaking news - 30 May 2005

On Monday, 30 May 2005 Marius Potgieter was inducted as a new member. Mavis Mulaudzi completed her CL 10 entitled Tsunami. Susan le Roux competed the final assignment for an ATM-b - her speech "Lifes too short" was from the Entertaining Speaker manual. Speaking from the Speaking to Inform manual, Willem le Roux, also completed the final assignment for his ATM-g.

The members of VC are extremely proud of Willem, Susan and Mavis.

Breaking news - 14 March 2005

On Monday, 14 March 2005 it was Vital's competition evening.

The judges, contest chairman timekeepers, counters and sergeant-at-arms were geared to fulfill their tasks. A record number of nine people participated in the Impromptu Contest, six in the Evaluation Contest and three in the English Prepared Contest.

Breaking news - 28 February 2005

The theme of this meeting was Fire and the Toastmaster of the Evening - Jonas Maloka - entertained the audience with some interesting facts about fire.

A Business meeting was held and Ann Williams and Gert Smalberger was accepted as members. Gert also delivered his "Ice-Breaker" speech at the meeting. The other speakers were Keabetswe Mokotedi (CL3), Perrin Hartslief (CL4), Kobus le Roux and Susan le Roux both presented advanced speeches.

Cooks Dauth attended her last meeting as a member as she is moving to Kwa-Zulu Natal.

The Table Topics Master - Petro Hartslief - selected Cooks, Bertus, Gert and Sylvia to presented unprepared speeches.

On Valentine's day VC held its annual Tall Tales Competition.

The contestants were:

Definitely a Tall Tales Competition that will be remembered for years to come. The winner of the competition was Salome Peddle.

Breaking news - 24 January 2005

The theme of this meeting was Earth. Our Toastmaster of the evening, Marion Poole, presented some interesting facts on Earth. Members had to answers and substantiate questions like "Is the earth flat?", "Where is the centre of earth?", "Where are the four corners of the earth?" and many more.

Lynnette Vermaak presented her CL5 on "The depths we go to", Susan le Roux's advanced speech from the Story Telling manual brought history to life and Brian Tomlin's speech was all about fitness and healthy eating.

The Table Topics Master, Petro van Niekerk, had the participants sweating with topics like Global warming and erosion.

Cooks Dauth and Willem le Roux shared the honk award.

Breaking news - 10 January 2005

The first meeting for 2005 was held on Monday, 10 January 2005. Three guests attended the meeting and three members presented prepared speeches. Colin Sherwood presented "Life's journey with Colin" as his CL1, Petro Hartslief did a CL7 - "Alcohol of choice". Joan Visagie's "Feline lessons" was also a CL7.

Bill Connelly was the Table Topics Master - the following three members presented unprepared speeches:

  • Marion Poole - Inspiration for New Year's resolutions
  • Keabetswe Mokotedi - Does New Year's resoltuions have a place in modern day society?
  • Joan Visagie - What resolution gave you the most fulfillment?

Colin Sherwood received the best CL Speaker Award, Keabetse the best Table Topics Award and Willem le Roux the Evaluation Award. Colin was also presented with the honk award for saying: "Hoping to meet a wife or someone to marry." - We hope so too, Colin!

Breaking news - 6 December 2004

On Monday, 6 December Vital members got together at Willem & Susan le Roux's house for a year-end braai. Everyone had a great time and Susan presented all those present with a certificate. Trudie Prinsloo (Division A Governor) and her husband Neels was also in attendance. The Area Governor, Jeremy Williams and his wife, Ann, also joined in the fun.

Breaking news - 22 November 2004

At the meeting held on Monday, four members presented prepared speeches. Bill Connelly talked (CL5) about "Soul Food" ... enlightening the members on his favourite hiking trails.

Petro Hartlief's speech (CL8) entitled "Resilient Toastmasters" focused on the commitment of members, while Kobus le Roux spoke from the Advanced Manual: Speaking to Inform. He educated the members on "Oaths".

The highlight of the evening was Jonas Maloke's CL10 speech ... "My Long Walk to CTM". Congratulations on achieving your CTM, Jonas!

Jonas has joined VC in 2001.

The best CL speaker was Petro with Cooks once again walking away with the trophy for the best Impromptu Speech. Willem was awarded the best evaluator award.

8 November 2004

At the meeting held on 8 November Willem le Roux (2003/2004 President) was handed the President's Distinguished Ribbon. During the 2003/2004 Toastmasters year, VC achieved President's Distinguished Status for the 2nd year running.

Frances Boshoff was handed her Distinguished Toastmaster Award (DTM) by Elize van Rensburg.
